I’m Jonathan Udkow. I have been in Adult Beverage Sales for years, surrounded by great food and wine and an inability to control my intake and the way I felt in the morning. I was a typical ‘fat kid,’ too much soda and junk food, not enough exercise and a metabolism that finally caught up to me. In high school I struggled with eating disorders and lost weight but was never happy, never comfortable, and always fighting with the inner critic in me that told me that it was not enough and that every imperfection was all anyone could ever see. I internalized a lot of anger and discomfort.

I played college Rugby and was an expert skier, having lost a lot of weight, I had the illusion of contentment. After college I looked for escapes, traveling extensively, drinking a lot, drug use, anxiety eating. I tried WW, Noom, Paleo, eating off small plates, never bringing serving plates to the table. Whatever it was, to try to lose weight I tried it. Some worked, until they did not anymore, and all of them just made me more miserable and gain more weight.

I responded to a mailer from MetPro and decided to give it a try. It is not the cheapest program, but I was getting to rock bottom physically and emotionally. Collaborating with Coach Ryan, I immediately found some success, starting at 217 pounds, with a goal of 195.

When we hit my goal weight quickly, I decided ten more pounds would be easy, and it was, by following the program, eating a lot of amazing food and now I am incredibly happy at 175 pounds, what I weighed when I was 17.

Who am I?…  I was born, raised, and still reside in Oakland California. I have two beautiful young children, an amazing wife from Brazil who I met in 2004 while backpacking for 14 months in South America. I speak Spanish and Portuguese and love tasty food and amazing wine. I love the Raiders, Led Zeppelin, cooking and reading.

What am I?  I am a mid-forties man who struggled for years. I have faced depression, job loss, COVID-19 with young children, etc. I have always struggled with weight gain and spent years between 215-245 pounds. I battled anxiety eating, stress eating, binging snacks and desserts, and binge drinking, often to blackout level.

How MetPro Works

MetPro increases your metabolic rate using lifestyle interventions, allowing your body to burn body fat without radical changes to your diet or exercise levels.
In 2024, I went through a Midlife Awakening! I want to tell you what has gotten me to this point. The key is that this is a reinforcing feedback loop all centered around MetPro. Without this program and the support of my coach, the other parts of this puzzle would not fit.

Most of all, I have discovered joy for the first time since I was a child. In fact, I have spent part of the year working on how to smile, because that seemed so foreign to me before this awakening.

  • Although you will collaborate with a coach, I will be here each step of the way to help with the intricacies should you want to follow my “100 not so easy steps to create your dream life”!!!
  • MetPro: The first month was a bit of a struggle but now I love my meal prep. I always find room on the grill for a few extra chicken breasts or lean pork. I put my dry ingredients for my yogurt or cottage cheese breakfasts together the night prior. I have a whole shelf dedicated to my delicious snacks, diverse types of nuts, almond butter, rice cakes, beef jerky, and more. I never go hungry! I love going to the gym. My coach has created an amazing workout plan for me, and at 43, I am stronger, leaner, and faster than I have ever been!
  • Mindfulness: Here is the kicker, I am healthier INTERNALLY than I am on the outside. Mindfulness and meditation have been unexpected gifts. They have helped me to control my anxiety (and therefore my anxiety eating), made me a better worker, father, and husband, and help me to stay centered and focused. MetPro has helped me to be able to sit comfortably on the ground, to be able to breathe easier, and to bring my joy to my practice and then to the rest of the day.
  • Regaining my basic range of motion: I have never been flexible, in fact, I struggled with a bad back for years. This was one of my motivations for losing weight, because each time the belly grew, I would end up hurting my back. Then I would sit around miserably taking pain killers while gaining more weight, until I felt better, got active, then inevitably hurt my back again. I now stretch every day and incorporate Yoga into my morning and evening routine. For years I took Ambien or Trazadone 4 nights/week or more. Since starting nightly Yoga and/or meditation, I have stopped taking any sleep aids. MetPro helped my flexibility by shrinking my body. I can rest in yoga poses that would have been impossible just a year ago. If you do not believe me, I will show you my amazing Plow Pose!
  • Range of motion test: Can you sit cross legged on the ground and stand up without using your hands? I could not, now I can. If you were pushing your child down a hill in a stroller and you fell, could you get up quickly and catch the stroller? If you are getting older and you fell in your kitchen and broke your wrist, would you be able to get up and call 911? Regaining your basic range of motion will help you to improve your life. MetPro has helped me to stay focused and enjoy my gains, my new confidence, and my dedication to being healthy.
  • Running: In 2012, I ran a full marathon. In 2020, my weight issues and plantar fasciitis debilitated me, and I thought I would never run again. Now I am training for a Marathon in 2025 with goals much bigger. I love collaborating with Coach Ryan as he has fine tuned an amazing workout plan dedicated to getting me to the Marathon ready to ROCK!
  • Reading and decreased social media use:  I am so tired of watching my friends and neighbors not living. Perpetually exhausted, “tech neck,” IPA belly, hurt backs, and addiction to our devices. MetPro has given me my energy back. I rarely use my phone now (down 70% from pre MetPro levels according to my iPhone stats). I do not have the need to ‘escape’ into the Instagram world and try to live a dream life. What do you do to escape the daily grind? What if it was not a grind anymore?

Goals for 2025-2026 and Beyond

Right now, I have two major goals that I will conquer with the help of MetPro:

First, professional Success: I have just started a new role in the wine industry and cannot wait to utilize what I have learned through MetPro to achieve success. First, I am joyful and happy every time I come to my office. Secondly, I do not have the need to drink to get drunk or eat to get stuffed. This will make me more productive and allow me to wake up every day feeling great, and when you are in the wine industry, this is a challenge. I am more confident in my skin and my clothes and can approach sales more easily and with a smile, not with desperation and exhaustion.

Second, I will run a 100-mile Ultra Marathon in 2026: My Marathon training is just the start, in 2025 after the Marathon, I will run a 50km trail race, a 50-mile race, and a 100km race. In 2026, I will run a 100-mile Ultra Marathon. Why? Because it is the hardest thing I can do. You tell yourself you do not have time, or the discipline to meal prep, or the confidence to say no to a drink offer, or the will power to refuse a second and third helping of dinner. If I can go from 217 pounds and miserable to 175 pounds and running 100 miles without stopping, then YOU CAN DO THIS. We can all achieve our goals, and it is not too late.

What is Metabolic Profiling
Metabolic Profiling is a complete step-by-step guide to mastering your metabolism. On its own MetPro is an algorithm, an evaluative process, and an engine fueled with the data you feed into it every day. It's designed to calculate the absolute best "next step" for you under any circumstance, and will do so with responsiveness and precision. Like a GPS it will recalculate your route at any destination or missed turn. Your personal results—and no one else's - will dictate each and every step the system directs you to take. Pretty cool, right?
What about medical conditions?
Medical conditions requiring nutritional therapy for things such as substantial liver and kidney disease or diabetes, fall outside MetPro's current scope of practice. See your medical professional for recommendations. Individuals seeking fitness and exercise only, may still qualify for our coaching services.
Does MetPro support my dietary restrictions?
You can follow the metpro system while still adhering to many common food restrictions, including gluten free, lactose free, wheat free, vegetarian, pescatarian, organic and raw food. MetPro also works in conjunction with nearly all popular diets including Weight Watchers, Paleo, blood type, south beach and dozens more.
Is this a no/low carb diet? My body needs carbs.
MetPro doesn’t limit itself to any “one” diet strategy therefore couldn’t be categorized as a low-carb diet. MetPro evolves to match your metabolic needs. Carb control is but one of many tools that can be applied to a lesser or greater degree depending on an individuals' propensity and response. If you don’t like cutting carbs, it’s likely you’ll learn that your body responds best with at least moderate carbohydrates. That doesn’t mean MetPro will water down our approach. We will explain what carbohydrate intake you’ve shown to respond best to and fully explain why.
Will I have to give up alcohol?
No. Now that doesn’t mean the principle of cause and effect doesn’t apply, but we’ll help you gain a complete understanding of different types of alcohol and their impact considering your goal. Bottom line, we’ll adjust on the back end to optimize for your lifestyle.

 

Will I be hungry all the time?

Nope. That’s a tact used by the diet industry, not us. At MetPro we believe in enjoyment, empowerment, and thriving. If you’re hungry all the time you won’t be a happy person. MetPro works by up-regulating your metabolic rate to trigger an adaptive response, not long term depravation. Now that doesn’t mean your coach might not ask for periods of being more restrictive, but the goal is to increase your metabolic capacity and not repress it through hunger.

Every diet I have ever tried fails after a few weeks. Why is this so different?
The diet failed to adapt to your adjusting metabolism. And frankly …the other diets you’ve tried weren’t designed for YOU. Perhaps you decreased when your body needed an increase or perhaps you restricted carbs when your body needed fewer calories. There are literally hundreds of factors and indicators your body gives as to what your next step needs to be –as long as someone is listening. We are here to help you listen and we don’t limit our tool box in helping you reach your goal.
