Endomorphs are the survivors of the group, and tend to be stocky and naturally strong. They have the slowest metabolism of the three body types by a significant margin. However, they build muscle and tolerate changes in intake levels well. This toleration is a double-edged sword when wanting to lose weight. Many Endomorphs find it difficult to reduce weight dramatically, but their natural inclination to hold onto muscle allows them to change their body composition effectively. Endomorphs should watch their overall calories more than other body types and include regular aerobic activity to optimize their body composition.
Mesomorphs tend to have a medium build leaning toward natural muscularity, but can gain body fat with age. Mesomorphs sit between Ectomorphs and Endomorphs in their propensity towards weight gain. Mesomorphs respond particularly well to weight training but may benefit from additional aerobic activity as they age to maintain overall body composition. Mesomorphs natural ability to build muscle usually results in positive changes in body composition rather than large shifts on the scale, especially when resistance training is present.
Ectomorphs tend to be leaner and hold less body fat in their arms and legs. Their metabolic rate is often faster. While this can make fat loss easier, if they don’t get enough fuel while training, they could be more susceptible to energy crashes. Adequate protein and regular meal timing is important for Ectomorphs. Gaining muscle can take longer than other body types but is generally more noticeable on Ectomorphs who hold less body fat in their extremities.
It’s possible to have traits from more than one body type. We recommend that you view your body type as a starting point on a spectrum rather than an exact equation – since everyone is unique. At MetPro our coaches use baseline testing when developing your training strategy. We carefully consider several factors when constructing your training program, such as your personal body type, goals, and training history. We re-evaluate constantly to ensure progress.
